Burnin' up?

Here are some steps you can take if you are too hot or cold in the Library:

  • Check the window sill closest to your seat. If you see a label by the grate, lift the grate and adjust the temperature control knob.
  • Open or close the window. You'll need to check out a special window key from the Circulation Desk.
  • Most importantly, report the problem to a full-time staff member at the Circulation Desk. We will ask Maintenance if they can adjust the temperature.

Good news!

Color and duplex printing is now available in the Nitze Computer Center!

Color printing is available on four machines in the Computer Center (the student monitors can direct you to the proper stations) and costs 20 cents per page. They will be adding color capability to more machines in the weeks ahead.

Note you will not be able to use your 300 page quota on the color printer. Duplex, or double-sided printing is presently available on one PC, with more to follow. The charge for duplex printing is 10 cents per page. Duplex printing is already available on all library workstations.

Contact Mark Golding if you have any concerns or questions.

URGENT! Laptop room / basement printing

If you have set up your laptop to print to the Library's Laptop Room printers and/or the SAIS Basement printer and you are using Windows XP or 2000, you are now required to perform two additional steps in order for your laptop to print. You must save a small application onto your laptop and then you must download and run a batch file to add an entry into one of your operating system's files. You can view the updated instructions at:

http://sais-jhu.edu/library/information/laptop Laptop room printing
or
http://sais-jhu.edu/library/information/basement Basement printing

You will only need to follow the instructions in step # 1 and in step # 2 for Windows 2000 or XP. If you use a Mac, you are not required to perform these two additional steps.

If you would like to be able to print to the Library's Laptop Room printers and/or the SAIS Basement printer from your laptop (either Windows XP/2000 or Mac) and you have never set this up before, you must follow the complete steps listed at:

http://sais-jhu.edu/library/information/laptop Laptop room printing
or
http://sais-jhu.edu/library/information/basement Basement printing

If you need further help, please let Sonny Singh know.

Online Now: Chicago Manual of Style

Ever stumped on how to cite an online journal versus a print copy? The Chicago Manual of Style probably has the answer. JHU now subscribes to an online version.

This guide presents two basic documentation systems, the humanities style (notes and bibliography) and the author-date style. The online version is searchable, making it easy to find answers to style and editing questions. Note that the Citation Quick Guide is another useful feature of the online version.

This resource is available on campus or via remote access.

Bloomberg redux.

Nov 17, 2006, 12:15 at the Bloomberg Offices

NOTE: Limited space! We need to submit a list of attendees to Bloomberg, so please sign up at the Library's Reference Desk or contact Steve Sears. Sign-up is first-come, first-served.

WHAT: Training for the Bloomberg software, which provides current business news, stock quotes, and financial data and information on international markets. SAIS has one dedicated Bloomberg terminal on the 6th floor of the Library. If you attended the Sept training, this one is a repeat of that class.

WHEN: Friday, November 17 from 12:15 to 1:30pm (approx). Arrive by 12:05.

WHERE: The Bloomberg offices at 1399 New York Ave NW (cross-street is 14th). Go the Security Desk in the Lobby and have the attendant direct the elevator to the 11th floor. Once inside the Bloomberg offices, collect a visitor badge from the security desk and then you'll be directed to the training room. You must sign up in advance so we can alert them to who is coming.

WHO: A Bloomberg professional, Jo Buckley, will do the training, which is of particular use for students in finance and economics classes.

QUESTIONS? Contact Steve Sears from SAIS Library (202-663-5907).
